How to Play
Move with purpose
White moves first. Select one of your pieces to see its legal destinations. You may never leave your own king in check.
Know the special moves
Castle when the king and rook have not moved and the king’s path is safe. Capture en passant immediately after an adjacent pawn advances two squares. Promote a pawn on the last rank to a queen, rook, bishop or knight.
Finish with checkmate
Checkmate wins: the king is in check with no legal escape. Stalemate and insufficient material are draws. This casual version also automatically draws on threefold repetition or fifty moves without a pawn move or capture.
Choose your table
Online moves have a 60-second turn limit. Local practice has no clock and does not affect rankings. Play the computer or take turns on the same device.
